Does your relationship have problems? Are you are drifting apart? Feel that the 'spark' has gone from your relationship? Has sex become a problem? Do you find it difficult to talk to each other? Do you feel that you are talking to each other but just keep going round in circles? Are your arguments getting longer and/or more frequent?
You may have got to the stage where the problems in your relationship are making you think about separation or divorce. Perhaps you have already reached that decision and are concerned about the effect this will have on your children and other family members.
Whatever stage you are at, maybe counselling can help.
If there's a problem, the obvious thing to do is talk to each other about it. However, this won't always work. There can be many reasons why. We can get stuck because of our past history, and find it difficult to forgive. Different sets of values can get in the way, such as "We always did it this way in my family". We can be so fed up with a constantly re-occurring topic of argument that we become totally de-energised.
Having someone to explore our feelings with can be a great relief, however it can be difficult to find someone who is willing to listen. We often feel that we would prefer to talk things over with someone we already know such as a friend or a family member, and they can be very supportive. However, they often have their own ideas about what you "should" do, or they may want to talk about their own emotional concerns. For a variety of reasons it might be difficult for them to hear what we want to say. This may prevent them from allowing us to explore our feelings enough to be useful.
Many relationship issues are best resolved if both you and your partner attend. However, your partner may not want to come for counselling.
If you are in this situation, individual counselling offers a way forward. You could work on issues such as working out what you want in a relationship, exploring your options, and support if your relationship has broken down.
I also offer short or longer term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals. I have worked with people who have experienced loss or bereavement, stress, anxiety and/or depression.I offer anger management to individuals as well as couples, life changes, personal growth and awareness.
